How Cloud-Native Platforms Are Adapting to Today’s Operations-First Mindset

Dilpreet Bindra, Sr. Director of Engineering at VMware by Broadcom, and Alastair Cooke of Tech Field Day unpack how Kubernetes operations are evolving—and why operational efficiency is becoming the defining challenge for enterprise platforms.

They highlight a central theme: Kubernetes has matured, and the industry’s priorities have shifted with it. Instead of debates about orchestration or early-stage API design, organizations now want durability, predictability and ways to extract maximum value from their hardware. That’s where performance, reliability and streamlined operations become critical. He points out that VMware’s engineering work—much of it upstream in projects like Cluster API, etcd, Harbor and Postgres—has been shaped by long-standing customer experience running Kubernetes at scale on virtualized infrastructure. The result is a stronger foundation for enterprise cloud adoption, especially as organizations demand more stability and better tooling.

A major portion of the discussion centers on VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and the effort to unify infrastructure provisioning under a consistent, Kubernetes-native API model. Bindra explains how VCF 9 brings together the company’s virtualization base, cloud consumption tools and Kubernetes management capabilities into a single experience designed to look and feel like a true private cloud. That means a UI that helps traditional VI admins generate manifests automatically, a GitOps-compatible workflow for provisioning clusters and VMs, and a deeper integration of multi-cluster control with capabilities formerly in Tanzu Mission Control.
